Well, it looks like the Emperor’s New Clothes are getting a blockchain makeover – Sony is launching its very own layer-2 blockchain called Soneium because apparently ‘Web3’ isn’t just for suckers who want to get rich quick anymore, but also for entertainment and gaming companies that want in on the action. Who needs inherent value when you can create something from nothing and call it a ‘blockchain’? The Sony Group is so excited about this new venture that they’re partnering with Astar Network (because one blockchain isn’t enough) to launch the Soneium testnet, because what’s more thrilling than testing out an unproven technology on unsuspecting developers? And of course, no Web3 initiative would be complete without a bunch of ‘technology partners’ who are probably just as clueless about what they’re doing. Optimism, Circle, Alchemy – sounds like the cast of characters in some sort of blockchain-themed soap opera.
